K-C'

K-C was my first Great Dane and not knowing what I was doing and not going to the right place to look for quality dogs, I bought from a puppy mill. Although K-C had a minor heart problem and was scared to death of men, she turned out relatively healthy. K-C was born October 23, 1996 and was sent to the Rainbow Bridge on December 19, 2003 due to Osteosarcoma. Here is K-C's story: On November 7th, I brought K-C to my local vet because she had a peanut-sized bump in her mouth. The vet put her on anti-biotics since he thought she'd jabbed her stick in her jaw and it was infected. So, I gave her those for the next week, but it only continued to grow. So, on November 17th, I took K-C to a better vet about an hour away. The vet looked in her mouth and immediately called the vet school for an appointment. So, the next day, November 18th, Deborah and I drove down to Baton Rouge and saw the Oncologist there. After the aspirate, the vet said she had Osteosarcoma, but a biopsy would tell them more. She immediately told me my options which ranged from $1000 - 8000. Those would keep her alive from 1 month - 1 year respectively!!! This was unbelievable to me as I had brought them a very seemingly healthy dog! Two days later, the biopsy came back benign! I was so thrilled, but the tumor was still growing fast. By now, it was the size of a large pecan. So, my vet decided to do a surgical biopsy where they put her under and actually remove bone and he sent that to the vet school. Well, after that, K-C went straight downhill. The tumor grew very quickly! She started having those "bad days" that the vet school had told me about. She was on good pain meds, but even that did not subside the pain my beautiful girl was feeling. The surgical biopsy also came back benign, but said that part of the tumor was cancerous. With that, there was no need in trying to remove any of it since just a small part was cancerous. It was two different tumors growing as one! So, after no answers and my sweet girl going downhill rapidly and the tumor growing to the size of a fist, on December 19th, we made the aweful decision to let her go. Hank and I were with her until the end and it was very, very sad. We will never forget out little talker. She was always there for me and whoever and whatever I brought home! I'll miss her so much.
